New Delhi: Attending a press conference involving former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proved costly for former captain Shakib Al Hasan. Just hours after the press conference concluded, hardliners attacked Shakib Al Hasan’s residence. The attack involved the use of bombs. A similar attack also took place at the home of the former MP (representing Magura-1) in the same area.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that hardline groups attacked the home of Shakib Al Hasan, the former national team captain and former MP from Magura, using petrol bombs. Multiple petrol bombs were hurled in quick succession. The bombing incident occurred at 8:45 PM. Furthermore, the hardliners vandalised both the exterior and interior of the house. Shakib Al Hasan had connected from Sri Lanka to speak with Sheikh Hasina during the press conference held in New Delhi.
Attackers Unidentified
According to the Bangladesh Police, details regarding the incident have been provided. Police stated that unidentified individuals allegedly launched a major attack on the Magura district home of the former captain and MP, Shakib Al Hasan, just hours after he participated in a media event in New Delhi featuring the ousted PM, Sheikh Hasina.
Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Magura Sadar Police Station, provided key details. He stated, “The incident occurred around 9 PM at Shakib’s residence in the Keshab Mor area of Magura town.” According to a statement given to The Daily Star, several miscreants threw brickbats at the house and smashed windows. Moreover, the miscreants made a concerted effort to set the house on fire.
Security Personnel Deployed at Shakib Al Hasan’s Home
Police reported that security forces arrived immediately upon receiving news of the attack on Shakib Al Hasan’s residence. There have been no reports of injuries resulting from the bombing. The individuals involved in the attack have not yet been identified. Security personnel have been deployed outside the residence as a precautionary measure. The entire matter is under investigation; the accused involved will soon be identified, and legal action will be taken.
No organisation has claimed responsibility.
Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently residing in India, held a press conference on Wednesday, her first in two years. Former Bangladesh cricket team captain Shakib Al Hasan also participated in the event.
Subsequently, a bomb attack was carried out at her residence. However, no organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Bangladeshi officials have not officially linked this incident to Sheikh Hasina’s press conference.
