New Delhi: Students across the country had staged protests against the NEET paper leak under the banner of the CJP. Amidst mounting student outrage, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had to resign. Furthermore, an agreement was reached during a meeting between CJP leaders and Union ministers regarding the withdrawal of cases filed against students and the provision of compensation. However, the Delhi Police has now dealt a major blow to the protesting students.
The police have made it clear that the 21 FIRs will not be quashed. This decision regarding the violence and vandalism in Delhi was taken during a high-level meeting at the police headquarters. Cases registered against unruly elements who created a disturbance during the protests will not be withdrawn.
Delhi Police Clarifies
The Delhi Police clarified that all 21 FIRs registered across five police stations in the New Delhi district and the IFSO unit of the Special Cell are against “unknown” miscreants. No specific students have been named in these FIRs. According to Delhi Police officials, the Supreme Court had ordered against taking action against students and others staging peaceful protests; however, the Court did not prohibit action against those who incited violence amidst the peaceful demonstrations. CJP leaders are deeply upset by this decision and are threatening to take to the streets again.
CJP Leaders Threaten Over Case Withdrawals
Leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) have been warning the Delhi Police and the Central Government to withdraw the cases. They state that if the cases are not withdrawn, they will be forced to take to the streets. CJP leaders claim that a condition of their talks with the Central Government was that all cases filed against students would be withdrawn by last Tuesday.
They maintained that no action would be taken against any student involved in peaceful protests. Responding to this threat, the Delhi Police stated that since no students were named in any of the cases, the question of withdrawing cases against them does not arise.
The Delhi Police reiterated that all cases have been registered against unknown persons. Action will be taken against any student found to be involved in the disturbances following the investigation. If criminals or anti-social elements are found to be involved, the strictest possible legal action will be taken against them.
Disturbances occurred on July 20
It is worth noting that a large crowd of students had gathered in Delhi during a march to Parliament. When the police resorted to a lathi-charge, the crowd became unruly and created havoc in several areas. They launched life-threatening attacks on police personnel, pelted stones, and damaged government property at Jantar Mantar, Sansad Marg, Janpath, Raisina Road, Ashoka Road, and Tolstoy Marg.
