The story of Lord Jagannath falling ill
“Once Madhav Das, the great devotee of Lord Jagannath, fell very ill. When he fell ill, Lord Jagannath himself came to serve him and slowly Madhav Das started recovering. When he recovered, he saw Lord Jagannath himself in front of him and he said to the Lord – Lord, if you wanted, you could have cured me like this, then why did you serve me for so many days? Then the Lord said that you still have 15 more days left for your recovery, so I am taking this illness of yours upon myself. After this, the Lord started falling ill for 15 days.“
During this period, the Lord takes rest and the devotees do not get to see him for 15 days and during this time, the Lord is given various kinds of medicines and is treated so that he becomes healthy and after this, the Lord gives darshan to his devotees.
Rath Yatra starts 15 days after the Lord falls ill
In Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025, after resting for 15 days, the Lord comes out and the Rath Yatra is started, on the first day of Rath Yatra, Chehra Pahara ritual is held where the Gajapati King of Puri starts sweeping in front of the chariot with a golden broom, after which sandalwood mixed water is sprinkled. After completing this ritual, all the devotees pull the chariot of Lord Jagannath and take him to the Gundicha Temple, Gundicha Temple is the house of Lord Jagannath’s aunt where the Lord stays for 9 days.

Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 has reached Gundicha temple, after reaching here, Lord does annual stay here for 9 days, he stays here with Subhadra and Balabhadra ji. This is his aunt’s house, after resting here, he reaches Jagannath temple on the eighth day, after this Lord is bathed and his ritualistic worship is done and after all the Vedic rituals, he is seated at his place, after which he again gives darshan to his devotees.
