New Delhi: All political parties are gearing up for a major push ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. While the official announcement of the election schedule may still be three to four months away, parties are already busy strategising their social equations. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has held power in UP four times, is currently undertaking significant organisational changes.
A meeting of the national executive was held at the party headquarters on Wednesday. In a major decision during the meeting, BSP supremo Mayawati appointed her younger nephew, Ishan Anand, as National Coordinator. She also instructed all party workers to work at the grassroots level to form the government.
Meanwhile, a party candidate stated that the Brahmin community would extend its full support to help form ‘Behanji’s’ government. Before the meeting, Ishan Anand sought blessings by touching the feet of his aunt and former Chief Minister, Mayawati.

At the meeting held at the party headquarters, Mayawati appointed Ishan Anand to the same position previously held by his elder brother, Akash Anand, that of National Coordinator. Party workers say that following this appointment, Ishan is now being viewed directly as the party’s youth icon. With this central-level responsibility, increasing the party’s seat tally in the upcoming assembly elections will prove to be a major challenge for him.
Brahmin community to help form BSP government: Vinod Mishra
Vinod Mishra, the candidate for the Mungra Badshahpur assembly constituency in Jaunpur (Purvanchal), stated that the Brahmin community would work to ensure the formation of a Mayawati-led government this time. He further mentioned that instructions were issued during the meeting on how to work towards increasing the party’s seat count in the elections. Additionally, they were directed to take the issue of the current government’s failures to the public.
People across all sections and castes are aware of the discipline and work culture that existed when the party was in power in 2007. What ‘Behanji’ achieved during her tenure is something that no one else has done in the past or will be able to do in the future. The BSP supremo held a meeting with party office-bearers at the party headquarters that lasted for about two hours. This was the third such meeting in a month. Notably, Ishan Anand made his first public appearance during this meeting following the ongoing rift within Mayawati’s family. The BSP is currently busy preparing for the assembly elections.
