New Delhi: In the age of social media, people often seek and receive substantial help by sharing their struggles. Financial aid is frequently raised by sharing details about family hardships or a loved one’s illness. Many such cases come to light. In one instance, a young man appealed for help on social media for his sister’s eye surgery, and a flood of donors stepped forward.
He managed to raise ₹1.58 lakh through social media in just one day. People contributed small amounts of ₹10 or ₹20 via QR code, and it did not take long for a significant sum to accumulate. However, some are now alleging a scam, although no concrete evidence has surfaced yet.
Allegations of a Scam
Some people on the internet labelled the incident a scam and demanded their money back. Users asked for proof of the medical emergency, while others claimed to have contacted the hospital, only to find no patient registered under that name. One user wrote, “We trusted you, but the hospital states that the patient associated with this ID has a different name, not Srishti Rathore.”
Risk of Losing Eyesight
Jai Singh Rathore had appealed for financial assistance for his 12-year-old sister, citing the family’s dire financial situation. He urged people to contribute whatever they could, even if it was just ₹10 or ₹2,0 towards her treatment. According to Jai Singh, his younger sister had begun losing her eyesight a few months earlier.
The family took her to Dr Shroff’s Eye Hospital in Delhi, where doctors diagnosed her with glaucoma and vitreous haemorrhage (bleeding inside the eye), conditions that were impairing her vision. The teenager explained that the family had already spent over ₹2.5 lakh on her treatment but required an additional ₹1.2 lakh for the next surgery. He stated that they had managed to arrange ₹50,000 through their own savings and help from relatives. We still need approximately ₹73,000.

Jai Singh Rathore shared that his mother passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic. He now lives with his father, sister, and grandmother. His father is the family’s sole breadwinner and works in the fields, leaving them with very little savings.
He said, “I feel very ashamed asking for this;s it feels like I am begging, ng but I am willing to do anything for her. She means everything to me. I will get a job after finishing Class 12. Then the situation will improve.
