New Delhi: Uma Shankar Singh, the lone BSP MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, has passed away. His death has come as a major blow to party workers and his supporters. He breathed his last late Wednesday night at the age of 55 following an illness. Uma Shankar’s passing marks the loss of a leader who held significant sway in the politics of the Purvanchal region.
With his death, the BSP’s representation in the Legislative Assembly has dropped to zero. He was the only candidate to win on a BSP ticket in the 2022 Assembly elections. By winning the Rasra seat in Ballia, he not only opened the BSP’s account but also demonstrated his political strength across the country. His victory was attributed more to his personal mass appeal than to the party’s strength. Notably, the party currently has no MPs from UP either. In essence, the BSP, which formed the government in UP four times in the past, now has zero representation in both the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly.
Uma Shankar was the BSP’s lone MLA in 2022
The BSP contested the 2022 UP Assembly elections on its own strength. However, Uma Shankar was the only candidate across the entire state to secure a victory on the BSP symbol. This win was seen as a result of his personal influence rather than the party’s standing. Now, with his passing, the BSP’s tally in the Assembly has hit zero.
This is a major setback for both Uma Shankar’s supporters and the BSP. The party no longer has any MLAs in the UP Assembly. Furthermore, the tenure of Ramji Gautam,m the party’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, is set to conclude later this year. The BSP already has zero representation in the Lok Sabha. Overall, the BSP, which once commanded a strong base in UP, is currently going through a difficult phase.
Uma Shankar passed away late Wednesday night
Uma Shankar, who became an MLA on the BSP symbol, had been ill for quite some time. He passed away on Wednesday after battling cancer. His death is considered a significant political blow to both his family and the BSP. Uma Shankar’s political journey was also inspiring; there are certain leaders whose personal hold remains strong even when their party’s mass base shrinks. Umashankar was also among such leaders.
In 2022, the BSP lost every seat across the state, but Umashankar carved a niche for himself nationwide by winning the Rasra seat in Ballia. Political analysts viewed this success as a personal victory. Even as the BSP’s support base steadily eroded, Umashankar’s hold remained firm; he stood his ground as a strong leader.
BSP to have zero representation in Parliament
It is not just in the Legislative Assembly; after November, the BSP will also have zero representation in Parliament. The party failed to win a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Currently, the BSP has only one member in Parliament, Ramji Gautam, who serves in the Rajya Sabha. The terms of 10 Rajya Sabha MPs from UP are set to expire in November 2026. These 10 MPs include eight from the BJP and one each from the SP and the BSP. Their tenure will conclude on November 25, 2026.
