New Delhi: Preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections have unofficially begun, with political parties already pulling out all the stops. The first week of September is set to be particularly significant for the political landscape of UP. Amidst these election preparations, Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya has expressed a desire to become the Chief Minister.
His statement expressing this ambition is rapidly going viral in political circles. During an interview, when asked about becoming the CM, he made it clear, albeit indirectly,y that he has his eyes set on the Chief Minister’s chair. This statement has reignited speculation that all is not well between CM Yogi Adityanath and Keshav Prasad Maurya, although such claims have surfaced in the past as well.
The party will decide who becomes CM – Maurya.
In the viral video, Keshav Prasad Maurya is asked how long he intends to remain Deputy CM and whether he has ever harboured a desire to become the Chief Minister. Responding to this, Maurya said, “Look, you might see me become the CM next time.”
He added, “Or perhaps you might see me in a different role next time. That is for the party leadership to decide; Keshav Prasad Maurya won’t decide it. In our party, even the most ordinary worker is given an opportunity.”
It won’t happen just because I want it – Maurya.
During the interview, Keshav Prasad Maurya stated, “I do have the ambition to become the CM. However, it won’t happen simply because I want it; in my party, the leadership makes that decision.” He further explained, “The party’s legislative wing decides under whose leadership we proceed. Our primary goal is to secure a majority,y a massive majority, much like in 2017. That is the objective with which we are contesting the election.
Once a majority is secured, the question of who becomes the Chief Minister will be settled in a meeting of the legislative party.” He noted that central observers arrive, gather feedback, and then make the announcement. Regarding his desire, he clarified, It is not as if I do not wish to become the CM.
BJP Gears Up for Elections
All eyes are on the UP Assembly elections. The BJP has already begun laying the groundwork for the polls. The party has formed the government in UP consecutively in 2017 and 2022. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is contesting the election on the strength of his administration’s track record regarding law and order, employment, and other development issues.
