New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the alleged disrespect shown to ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Congress office on Independence Day is escalating. The BJP has accused former Congress President Sonia Gandhi of disrespecting the national song. BJP leaders have now lodged a formal complaint against her regarding this incident.
The complaint was filed at the Urwa Police Station in Mangaluru, Karnataka. BJP leader Vikas Puttur stated that the entire nation witnessed the Congress party’s actions yesterday, adding that the party has historically opposed ‘Vande Mataram’. The debate between the BJP and Congress over ‘Vande Mataram’ has intensified once again.
Congress has always opposed ‘Vande Mataram’ – BJP.
BJP leader Vikas Puttur launched a scathing attack on the Congress party over the ‘Vande Mataram’ issue. He reiterated that the whole country saw the Congress party’s conduct yesterday and claimed the party has always opposed ‘Vande Mataram’. He alleged that during the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Congress national headquarters, Sonia Gandhi interrupted the proceedings while ‘Vande Mataram’ was being played; he and the nation observed her disrupting the event and instructing party workers to stop the song.
He further stated that this matter warrants legal action. He emphasised that ‘Vande Mataram’ holds a status equal to the national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, and asserted that anyone disrespecting it—regardless of their position or power—should face legal consequences. Consequently, he has filed an official complaint at the Urwa Police Station seeking legal action and the registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi.
Warning to file a petition in the High Court
BJP leader Puttur warned the Congress that he would move the Karnataka High Court regarding the matter. He stated that if the state’s Congress government and the police fail to act, he would file a petition in the Karnataka High Court, adding that he has full faith in the judicial system.
He maintained that if the national song or national honour has been insulted, action must be taken in accordance with the law. He also urged the police to ensure there is no political interference in the case. For now, the matter awaits investigation and further action by the police regarding the allegations made in the complaint.

On the occasion of August 15, ‘Vande Mataram’ was being sung at the Congress office in Delhi. It is alleged that during the rendition, senior Congress leaders present on the stage were conversing with one another and appeared uncomfortable as the national song was being sung in its entirety.
