If you travel by vehicle on Bihar’s roads, you will have to shell out more money. The Bihar government has now hiked toll rates for state highways. A proposal to this effect was approved by the cabinet under the leadership of Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary. Toll tax will now be collected on state highways. If you plan to travel on any state highway in Bihar, be prepared to pay higher toll charges; this policy has been approved during a cabinet meeting.
Regulations Approved in Meeting
Under the leadership of Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, the Cabinet approved the ‘Toll Tax Regulations 2026’ during a meeting held on Wednesday. Under this proposal, vehicle travelling on highways across the state will now be required to pay higher toll taxes. Additionally, the specific toll tax rates have been finalised through this Cabinet proposal. The state has a network comprising 3,614 kilometres of state highways and 3,617 kilometres of four-lane roads. However, no announcement has been made yet regarding the date for implementing these new toll tax rates; the implementation date is expected to be announced soon.

Date to be finalised soon
The date for collecting toll tax at the revised rates by the Bihar government will also be finalised soon. According to a report, the toll rate for light motor vehicles on state highways has been set at ₹1.25 per kilometre. For heavy vehicles like trucks, the fee will be up to ₹6.65 per kilometre, bringing the total toll tax for heavy vehicles to ₹8.10 per kilometre. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to accept digital payments via FASTag and other electronic payment systems.
Higher charges will be levied on overloaded vehicles
According to the rules notified by the government, an annual review will be conducted, and toll rates will be adjusted as necessary. Under the new system, higher tolls will be collected from vehicles lacking FASTags, and additional charges will be levied on overloaded vehicles. Additionally, facilities such as concessional passes and multiple-trip options will be provided to regular commuters.

According to government regulations, a toll of ₹1.25 per km will be charged for light vehicles such as cars and jeeps. Additionally, the toll rate will be ₹2 per km for small commercial vehicles and ₹4.25 per km for 2-axle buses or trucks. Meanwhile, large vehicles (such as Poclain machines and dumpers) will be required to pay a toll of ₹6.65 per km, and vehicles with 7 or more axles will have to pay ₹8.10 per km.
