New Delhi: The political momentum surrounding the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections is steadily building up. With the elections likely to be held in February and March 2027, all political parties appear to be gearing up for the contest. In UP, the ruling NDA alliance is preparing for the polls by highlighting the development work it has undertaken. Meanwhile, the INDIA alliance is also actively gearing up for the electoral battle.
A major question on everyone’s mind concerns the eventual shape of the INDIA alliance. There appears to be a lack of consensus regarding seat-sharing between the main opposition party, the Samajwadi Party (SP), and the Congress in UP. Congress leaders are staking a claim to over 150 seats, whereas the SP is complicating the matter by asserting that the priority is victory, not the number of seats.

Amidst this, Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav has made a striking statement regarding the alliance. Akhilesh Yadav emphasised that the focus should be on victory rather than seat allocation. He shared this sentiment in a post on the social media platform X on Sunday morning.
Akhilesh Yadav’s Post
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav sought to convey a significant message through a couplet on the social media platform X. He wrote: “When the objective is clear, hands join together; when the gaze is fixed on the destination, the journey becomes easy!” He added that the crucial issue is not how many seats or which specific seats go to which party within the alliance; rather, the priority is ensuring a victory for the alliance itself.
He further emphasised, “Let me reiterate, it is not about the seats, but about the victory.” He stated that this victory would be the result of their collective effort transcending the individual parties within the alliance. He noted that the ongoing struggle aims to ensure that communalism never rears its head again, that the BJP does not harm democracy, the Constitution, or reservation, and that the country’s social harmony and prosperity flourish once more. Akhilesh Yadav concluded his post with the slogan: “Jai Samvidhan, Jai Hindustan” (Hail the Constitution, Hail India).

Ongoing War of Words
As the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections draw closer, the claims made by political leaders are intensifying. Significant friction is evident between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP, both part of the INDIA alliance, regarding seat-sharing. Congress leaders, such as Saharanpur MP Imran Masood and UP in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam, appear to be exerting pressure to secure a favourable number of seats. Meanwhile, several SP leaders are advising Congress to adhere to the principles of the alliance while gearing up for the electoral battle.
How Many Seats Might SP Offer Congress?
It is worth noting that Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh are seeking an equal share of seats with the SP; some are even demanding more than 150 seats. The Samajwadi Party, however, aims to persuade Congress to accept a smaller number of seats, emphasising that the focus should be on winning rather than just the seat count. It is anticipated that the SP is planning to offer Congress between 70 and 80 seats. Whether Congress will agree to this allocation remains to be seen.
