The party’s national president, Mayawati, has openly declared that her party will contest the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab on its own. This means that Mayawati’s party will contest the elections without any alliance. Mayawati has decided not to form an electoral alliance with any political party. This decision is being considered a major blow to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
It is believed that their difficulties may increase, as the two parties contested the last assembly elections together. And now, this time, Mayawati has decided not to contest the upcoming elections. While Mayawati has decided to contest the upcoming Punjab elections alone, she has also clarified the party’s electoral strategy for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, in addition to Punjab. She has begun formulating further strategies. In a meeting with party officials, she instructed them to strengthen the organization, activate grassroots workers, and prepare independently for the elections. She has clearly indicated that she will not contest the elections with anyone. The leadership says that the party now wants to rely on its political strength and social base, and is working on that strategy.
Old alliance with the Akali Dal broken
In Punjab, the last election has been a long-standing political alliance between Mayawati’s BSP and the Shiromani Akali Dal. However, Mayawati has now decided that no new alliance will be formed for the upcoming elections. The two parties contested the Punjab Assembly elections together last time, and under the seat-sharing arrangement, the BSP won 20 assembly seats, while the Akali Dal fielded candidates on 97. However, the election results were not in the alliance’s favor, resulting in a failure to win.
Following this, the political distance between the two parties grew. The alliance ended before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and both parties pursued separate electoral paths. Mayawati’s latest decision has made it clear that a re-alliance between the two parties in the upcoming 2027 assembly elections is highly unlikely. Therefore, Mayawati has put an end to all discussions of an alliance.

Dalit voters have been a key pillar of BSP politics in Punjab. The state has a significant Dalit population, so Mayawati is targeting the Dalit vote. Therefore, the BSP is now pursuing a strategy to win the assembly elections on its own.
