New Delhi: Flash floods have wreaked havoc in India’s neighbour, Nepal. Conditions became so dire that people struggled even to step out of their homes. So far, 160 people have lost their lives in this tragedy, and over 800 are reported missing. According to the latest reports, 300 Indian tourists visiting Nepal are also among the missing.
The death toll from the flood disaster in Nepal could rise further. During this massive deluge, debris carried by the sudden surge of water destroyed everything in its path; the devastation was extreme across three districts. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Khanal stated on Thursday that approximately 300 Indians are among the thousands missing in the floods. Khanal also confirmed that 160 deaths have been verified in the tragedy that struck the Rasuwa region.

The scene of the flash flood disaster was truly harrowing. Nepal Police reported that a sudden flood occurred in the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 160. The floods have caused massive destruction across three districts. The flow of its tributary, the ‘Lhende’, was obstructed by an avalanche, triggering the flash flood.
The disaster first struck the ‘Timure’ area near Rasuwagadhi—located on the Nepal-China border—where debris disrupted normal life. Information received a day earlier indicated that at least 500 people were missing, including 133 Indians and 37 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Among them were at least 50 pilgrims who had gone on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Helpline Number Issued for Indians Stranded in the Floods
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued an emergency helpline number for Indians stranded in the floods in Nepal. The embassy announced via a post on X that people can contact the numbers +977 985 131 6807 or +977 970 910 7500. If any family member is stranded due to the floods, information can be provided here immediately.
Additionally, in another post, the Indian Embassy stated that it is in constant contact with relevant officials of the Government of Nepal to ensure the swift rescue and relief of Indian citizens affected by the floods. Efforts are also underway to further strengthen relief and rescue operations in coordination with the Government of Nepal.
