Nowadays, children love to eat something they like, whether it’s breakfast or evening snack, and the first thing that comes to mind is fries. Children love fries, but instead of always serving potato fries, you can make a different snack at home using semolina. These are not only tasty but also healthy for your child. Semolina fries resemble French fries and can be prepared with mild spices of your choice. In many semolina fries recipes, the mixture is first cooked with water to form a soft mixture, then shaped and crisped. In this article, we’ll give you a recipe for making semolina fries at home and feeding them to your children.

What do you need to make semolina fries?

  • This recipe requires about 1 cup semolina,
  • 1.5 cups water,
  • A little salt, and
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons oil
  • A little oregano
  • Finely grated carrots

First, prepare the semolina mixture.

Heat water in a pan and add salt. Once the water is hot, slowly add the semolina, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Cook the mixture until the semolina thickens and begins to separate from the sides of the pan. Then, turn off the heat and let the mixture cool for a while.

Shape the fries like this:

When the mixture has cooled enough to be easily handled, add a little oil and form a soft dough. Now, roll it out on a smooth surface or between two lightly greased sheets to form a layer about 3 to 5 millimeters thick. Then, cut them into long, thin strips with a knife. These strips will resemble fries.

Make the Fries Crispy

If you want to fry them in oil, heat the oil to medium heat. Add the fries in small portions and cook until golden brown. Adding too many fries to the pan at once can cause them to stick together, so it’s best to fry in small batches. Remove the finished fries to a tissue or kitchen paper towel to drain off any excess oil.

A Less-Oil Option Also Available

If you have an air fryer, you can prepare semolina fries with less oil. Place the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket and lightly brush with oil. The cooking time may vary depending on the capacity and temperature of the air fryer, so be sure to check the condition of the fries frequently during your first batch.

How to Serve for Kids?

Semolina fries for children can be served with tomato sauce, a mild homemade dip, or a yogurt dip. For younger children, limit the amount of chili, excess salt, and strong spices. Also, let the fries cool slightly before serving, as the inside can be hot.

The advantage of semolina fries is that they can be prepared with common ingredients available at home and there’s the option of adding different vegetables to add flavor. So, next time you want to make something different and crispy for your kids, you can definitely try making semolina fries instead of potatoes.
