New Delhi: Throwing eggs at politicians and shouting slogans at them has become a common occurrence in West Bengal these days. Amidst this, a former TMC MLA faced the wrath of a crowd that not only hurled eggs at him but also garlanded him with shoes. The former MLA had been arrested on allegations of hastening the cremation of the body in the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Subsequently, the public expressed their anger by throwing eggs at him and draping a garland of shoes around his neck. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred; prominent TMC leaders have faced public ire in the past as well.

Crowd attacks while he is being taken to court

Police were transporting the former TMC MLA from the Khardah police station in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district to the court when an unruly crowd waiting outside attacked him. Eggs and shoes were hurled at Nirmal Ghosh outside the station. Furthermore, the angry mob rained kicks and punches on him.

For his safety, police and Rapid Action Force personnel had placed a helmet on his head. The mob then targeted him, throwing shoes, slippers, eggs, and even mud at the former MLA. They also garlanded him with shoes. Along with Nirmal Ghosh, his close associate and former Panihati councillor Sanjib Mukherjee also faced similar public fury.

Mukherjee was arrested a day earlier.r

Mukherjee had been arrested by the police a day prior in connection with this case. He is also accused of being present when the doctor’s body was being taken to the cremation ground following the post-mortem. As the police were escorting both accused to the Barrackpore Sub-divisional Court, people present in the court complex surrounded them, shouting “Thief, thief!” Videos surfacing on social media clearly showed stains of mud and egg on the white kurta and shirt worn by both accused.

As the police were escorting the two accused to the Barrackpore Sub-divisional Court, people present on the premises surrounded them, shouting “Thief, thief!” In the videos that have surfaced, stains of mud and egg were clearly visible on the white kurta and shirt worn by the two accused.

The third accused in the case, Somnath D, ey the former chairman of the Panihati Municipality, remains at large and has evaded police custody. This entire course of action was initiated following a fresh complaint lodged on Monday by the father of the deceased doctor. An FIR was registered based on the father’s complaint, alleging that Nirmal Ghosh had misused his power as the then MLA.
