In Assam, floods triggered by the monsoon have wreaked such devastation that people are struggling for basic survival. Everything in the flood-affected areas has been destroyed, and residents are dependent on others even for their daily meals. The floods have inflicted wounds on the landscape that will take years to heal. Moreover, the weather remains inclement.
Early morning rains have worsened conditions across various parts of North India. Continuous rainfall is also disrupting the Amarnath Yatra, causing difficulties for pilgrims travelling along the mountainous routes. There appears to be no immediate respite from the rain; the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across various parts of the country. Heavy Rain Warning for 15 States
The Meteorological Department reports active monsoon conditions stretching from North India to Central and Eastern India, bringing heavy rainfall. Heavy rain is predicted for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand. Additionally, spells of rain are likely in West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Light rain is expected in 19 districts of Rajasthan. A fresh spell of rain is likely to commence on August 10, with wet weather conditions expected to persist until August 12–13. A heavy rain warning has been issued for four districts in Madhya Pradesh today, while other districts may experience light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Weather Forecast for Delhi
The Meteorological Department predicts a change in weather conditions for Delhi and the NCR region over the next 24 hours. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are anticipated in Delhi this week. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 24 degrees Celsius. Delhi has been experiencing rain accompanied by thunderstorms for the past four days. On August 8, the city recorded its highest August rainfall in two years; Saturday saw 98.7 mm of rainfall. The last time such significant rainfall occurred in August was when 100.6 mm was recorded.
Amarnath Yatra Suspended Due to Continuous Rain
The monsoon is active across the valleys of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing a spell of continuous rain. Landslides triggered by the downpour have completely blocked roads on the national highway. Meanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra has been suspended due to the risk of cloudbursts. There are still 20 days remaining for the pilgrimage to conclude; only those currently on the journey will be allowed to offer prayers.
There is no immediate prospect of clear weather ahead. The IMD has issued a warning for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Mirpur, Kulgam, Jammu, Poonch, Kathua, Shopian, Doda, Rajouri, Kishtwar, and Anantnag.
