New Delhi: Hopes for a cessation of hostilities between the US and Iran have emerged once again. For two weeks, the US had been continuously targeting Iranian military installations, and Iran had been retaliating with its own attacks. However, a recent statement by US President Donald Trump suggests that the people of the Middle East might soon find relief from these aerial strikes.
President Donald Trump has decided to halt the attacks on Iran that had been ongoing for two weeks; this marks the first pause in that period. Even after plans for a new strike were prepared, Trump ordered the military to call off the operation. Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are expected to ease, bringing relief to global trade.
US Moving Towards Dialogue
President Trump’s recent statement indicates that the US is now moving towards dialogue. At the same time, the US remains fully prepared to resume military operations if necessary. According to US media reports, this decision was driven by a desire to give diplomatic efforts a chance, concerns over dwindling missile defence stockpiles, and the fear of the conflict escalating further. Trump believes that reaching an agreement with Iran is the most beneficial course of action.
Trump Wants to Pave the Way for Diplomacy
Donald Trump now views a deal with Iran as advantageous. He believes that military action had reached its limit without triggering a full-scale war; he wants to create space for diplomacy, while keeping the option open to resume attacks should talks fail for any reason.
Meanwhile, US media reports state that the decision was prompted by the need to allow diplomatic efforts to proceed, concerns regarding depleting missile defence reserves, and the risk of the conflict spiralling out of control.
Speaking to reporters, Trump stated that while the US is fully prepared, he believes that reaching an agreement with Iran would be the wiser choice. He added, “We are talking to them right now. I think that as the days go by, they are becoming more serious about this.
What Are the Pentagon’s Concerns?
It is worth noting that another major reason for halting the attack was concern over the Pentagon’s dwindling stockpiles of missile defence systems. According to a report in The New York Times, senior military officials warned that escalating the operation could deplete the inventory of Patriot interceptor missiles and other air defence systems deployed in the Middle East.
Additionally, General Dan Kane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, informed Trump that the Pentagon had utilised more than 1,200 Patriot interceptor missiles in recent months.
