New Delhi: Amidst the buzz surrounding the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has intensified its grassroots preparations to challenge the BJP. All parties currently have their eyes on the political equations of Western Uttar Pradesh. The challenge in Western UP has grown since the RLD ended its alliance with the SP; the RLD has always held a distinct presence in the region.
People still lean towards the RLD, largely due to the legacy of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. Meanwhile, the SP has initiated its own “social engineering” strategy to counter the RLD. While the equations involving farmers, Jats, and Muslims dominate discussions in Western UP, it is worth noting that there is also a significant population of Brahmin and Tyagi voters here.
These voters often act as a “silent” force capable of disrupting established political calculations. Tyagis and Brahmins hold the power to make or break electoral outcomes across two dozen seats, and the SP is now eyeing this vote bank.
SP Sets Sights on Tyagis and Brahmins in Western UP
Did you know that districts like Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Shamli, and Bijnor have always played a pivotal role in the politics of Western UP? This region is also known as “Jatland.” However, Tyagi and Brahmin voters here remain a silent force, capable of determining victory or defeat on dozens of seats.
Recognising the significance of the Tyagi-Brahmin vote, the SP has launched a new outreach strategy to win them over, starting with the Muzaffarnagar region. In Western UP, the Tyagi community considers itself a part of the Bhumihar group. To manage these political dynamics, the SP high command has entrusted the responsibility of wooing Tyagis and Brahmins to Rajiv Rai, the MP from the Ghosi constituency.
Brahmins Included in Akhilesh’s ‘PDA’
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has now expanded his “PDA” mission to include “Pandits” (Brahmins) alongside the Backwards Classes, Dalits, and Minorities. This inclusion marks an expansion of the party’s outreach strategy. The responsibility of expanding this strategy and implementing it on the ground has been entrusted to Rajiv Rai, the SP MP from Ghosi.
Rajiv Rai is also considered a prominent Bhumihar face of the party. Senior SP leader Pramod Tyagi organised a ‘Tyagi-Brahmin Sammelan’ (conference) in Muzaffarnagar, which party MP Rajiv Rai attended as the chief guest.

SP MP Rajiv Rai launched a scathing attack on both the Modi government at the Centre and the Yogi government in the state. He stated that there is no section of society that does not feel cheated. Referring to the farmers’ protest, Rajiv Rai alleged that the participating farmers were branded as ‘Khalistanis’ and that lathi-charges were used against their children. He further pointed out that while farmers’ sugarcane was diverted for ethanol production, neither did the price of sugarcane increase nor did petrol become cheaper.
