The ongoing farmers’ protest in Hubli over sugar MSP has ended.
The protest in Hubli, Karnataka, over the minimum selling price (MSP) for sugar and sugarcane prices has been called off after receiving assurances. Farmer leaders were told that their demands would be discussed with the Union Minister in Delhi.
Apart from Karnataka, farmers from Maharashtra and other areas also participated in the protest. The key demands of the farmers included increasing the MSP of sugar and fixing a fair price for sugarcane for the 2026-27 crushing season.
According to farmer leaders, an agreement has been reached to send a 30-member delegation for talks in Delhi. This delegation will meet with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on October 10th.

Thirty representatives of organizations will travel to Delhi on October 10th to present their demands. Along with the MSP of sugar, discussion on the price of sugarcane, price of ethanol and other issues related to farmers is also proposed in the meeting.
Farmers’ organizations have demanded an increase in the minimum selling price of sugar. Different reports have put the demand of farmers at ₹50 to ₹60 per kg.
Leaders say that all these demands will be discussed in detail in the meeting to be held in Delhi. At present, the decision to withdraw the protest has been taken after the assurance of talks.

Demand to fix sugarcane price at ₹5,500 per tonne
Farmers protesting in Hubli also demanded that the price of sugarcane be fixed at ₹5,500 per tonne for the 2026-27 crushing season. Farmers say that considering the costs like production, labour, fertiliser and transportation, they should get better prices.
Apart from this, farmer organizations have also demanded to include the issue related to Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane in the talks. There is also a demand for discussion on changes in the price of ethanol and matters related to sugar mills.
Farmers have M.S. Issues like implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations and pending sugarcane payments have also been raised.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi called for talks in Delhi
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had appealed to the protesting farmer leaders to come to Delhi and hold talks with the relevant authorities. After this, the way was paved for a meeting with the delegation.
The Model Code of Conduct applicable at the local level was also cited as the reason for not holding the meeting in Hubli. After this, through talks between farmers and public representatives, an agreement was reached to hold a meeting in Delhi.
After getting assurance, farmer organizations ended their protest. Now further talks will be held on the demands of the farmers at the Delhi meeting on October 10.

Traffic was also affected in Hubli during the protest.
Protests took place at Kittur Channamma Circle and surrounding areas in Hubli. Due to the protest, traffic on some roads of the city was affected and people had to use alternative routes.
During the protest, farmer leaders had demanded a clear decision from the government regarding their demands. After initial disagreement over the proposal to go to Delhi for talks, it was finally agreed to send a delegation.
After the demonstration ended, the farmers left for their respective places. Now the organizations associated with the movement are eyeing the meeting to be held in Delhi.
Negotiations will be held on MSP, FRP, and ethanol prices.
Demands are not limited to the MSP for sugar. The delegation will also place before the Union Minister the FRP of sugarcane, the price of ethanol, payments related to sugar mills and other agriculture-related issues.
Farmers’ organisations have demanded an increase in the MSP of sugar from the current ₹31 per kg. At the same time, the demand for sugarcane has come to ₹5,500 per tonne in the 2026-27 season.
The government has said that it will listen to the demands of the farmers through talks. However, a final decision on the demands has not yet been reached, and the situation will become clearer only after the meeting on October 10th.

Farmers’ eyes are fixed on the October 10th meeting.
After the withdrawal of the protest in Hubli, the next round of talks between the farmers and the central government will now take place in Delhi. The 30-member delegation will present its key demands in a meeting with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on October 10.
The farmers’ main demands include issues such as an increase in the MSP for sugar, changes in the price of sugarcane, the price of ethanol, and pending payments. The government’s stand on these demands will be revealed during the meeting.
At present, after the protest has been postponed, the way for talks is open. The outcome of the October 10 meeting will now be monitored on the basis of the assurance given by the farmers’ organizations after they withdrew the agitation.
