New agentic coding model launched
According to Reuters, Elon Musk’s xAI has introduced “grok-code-fast-1,” a small and affordable agentic coding model. Windsurf and GitHub Copilot make its debut.
Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, have introduced a new agentic code model, the quick and inexpensive grok-code-fast-1. According to a Reuters story, the model, which was released on Thursday, is the first step toward xAI becoming one of the fastest-growing areas of artificial intelligence.

Grok-code-fast-1: What is it?
- An AI-based program that can handle coding duties on its own is called an agentic coding model, and it can be a helpful tool for coders.
- According to xAI, Grok-code-fast-1 has a low economic form factor and high-performance code production, making it a cost-effective substitute for routine coding tasks.
The business also confirmed that the model will be provided for free for a limited time with certain launch partners, including Windsurf and GitHub Copilot. This intended implementation shows that before the concept is widely used, xAI is interested in quickly testing it in developer environments.

Growing competition in coding assistance driven by AI
Musk’s xAI operates in a cutthroat market where OpenAI and Microsoft already have a strong presence.
For instance, Microsoft introduced an AI-powered GitHub Copilot codewriter earlier this year, and CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged that 20–30% of Microsoft’s code is already generated by AI.
Meanwhile, in June, ChatGPT Plus clients were able to access the OpenAI Codex agent, reaffirming the relevance of AI in software development.
Additionally, according to Reuters, xAI sued Apple and OpenAI in a U.S. federal court in Texas, alleging that they conspired to stifle competition in the artificial intelligence sector.
Under grok-code-fast-1, Musk hopes to carve out a position in a crowded but rapidly expanding sector with a quick, portable, and reasonably priced AI coding helper.
