Weather Update

New Delhi: With the onset of the monsoon in North India, heavy rainfall is continuing across various regions. Torrential rains have brought life to a standstill in many areas, including the capital, Delhi. Late-night downpours in most parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttarakhand have created a critical situation, causing conditions to spiral out of control.

Water levels in rivers have also begun to rise. In the Delhi-NCR region, late-night rains turned roads into rivers. The northeastern states are also facing a dire situation due to the rain, with reports of landslides emerging from hilly areas. Rainfall continues unabated in South India as well. The next 24 hours are expected to be challenging; the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across several states. Details regarding the weather forecast for specific regions are provided below.

Heavy rain is expected in these states over the next 24 hours

According to the IMD, a ‘Red Alert’ has been issued for several states due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall. The department has predicted heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Sikkim within the next 24 hours.

Additionally, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in Karnataka, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rainfall is predicted for today, July 9, in Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, and West Uttar Pradesh.

Rainfall is expected here as well.

The Meteorological Department has issued heavy rain warnings for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Madhya Maharashtra. A heavy rain alert, specifically a ‘Red Alert,’ has also been issued for West Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, and Goa. Furthermore, an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and coastal Karnataka, where heavy rainfall is anticipated.

Rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours

The past 24 hours have seen significant rainfall across the country. Vast areas turned into rivers; motorboats were seen plying the streets instead of cars. The most alarming visuals emerged from Surat, Gujarat, where rainfall caused water levels on the roads to rise to three feet.

Vehicles became stranded in the water, and people had to carry small children on their shoulders to get them home. Traffic came to a standstill amidst the deluge. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall disrupted normal life in Konkan, Central Maharashtra, and South Karnataka, with precipitation levels reaching 21 centimetres or more.

Weather in Delhi

According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi is likely to experience inclement weather today as well. The capital is expected to record a maximum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius. The sky is likely to remain cloudy, and humidity levels are expected to hover around 94 per cent.
