Mahashivtatri 2025: The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated with great pomp in Hinduism. This year Mahashivratri is on 26 February. It is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. On this day Lord Bholenath and Mata Parvati were married, so on the day of Mahashivratri, the procession of Lord Bholenath comes out with great pomp and all the devotees do special worship and adornment of Lord Bholenath and Mata Parvati on this day and offer things dear to Bholenath.

Along with this, in Mahashivtatri 2025 Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva is also done and clothes and makeup items are offered to Mata Parvati. There is special significance of worshiping Lord Bholenath on this day, due to which Lord Bholenath is pleased and gives the desired fruit.
Shiva worship method in Mahashivtatri 2025

- Mahashivtatri 2025 is coming very soon, on this day, before doing puja, first of all wake up in the morning and purify yourself by taking a bath.
- After this offer water to Lord Sun.
- After this if possible make a Shivling of Lord Shiva from clay or you can worship any Shivling.
- Bathe Lord Shiva with pure water and Gangajal.
- While starting the puja, keep your face in the south direction.
- After this offer all the things dear to Lord Bholenath like Belpatra, Dhatura, honey, ghee, sugar, ash, different types of fruits, plum, betel nut, now adorn Mother Parvati, make her wear a chunari and offer all the makeup items.
- After this do the aarti of Lord Shiva, on this day.
- along with fasting, it is also necessary to do night vigil, devotees should do night vigil and sing bhajans and kirtans of Lord Bholenath and chant Om Namah Shivaya, by doing this Lord Bholenath is pleased and gives the desired results.
Mythological importance of Mahashivratri 2025
Mahashivtatri 2025 is also very important mythologically, many stories are prevalent about it, according to one story, once a debate broke out between Brahma and Vishnu about who is the greatest among the two, after which Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a pillar of fire, no beginning or end of this fire pillar was visible, then Lord Vishnu and Brahma sat in their respective vehicles to go to the end of this fire pillar.

For this, Brahma went upwards and Lord Vishnu went towards the underworld but both could not know the end of this fire pillar, then they realized their mistake and returned, the ego of both ended. This incident happened on the day of Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi and it is known as Mahashivratri.
Another story is popular for Mahashivtatri 2025
When the ocean was being churned, the pots of both nectar and poison came out of the ocean churning. Seeing the pot of poison, all the gods and demons got frightened. Then Lord Shiva drank that poison himself to save the world. It stopped at his throat due to which his throat turned blue and Lord Bholenath came to be known as Neelkanth. Lord Shiva had protected this world by drinking poison, so the fast of Mahashivratri is observed to express gratitude to Lord Bholenath.
