Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies may be out of the Oscars, but it has now created a new record. The film has been selected for the Japan Academy Film Prize and will compete with movies like Oppenheimer, The Zone of Interest, and Poor Things.
Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies was released in India in March 2024 on the OTT platform Netflix. The film was loved by the audience. Later, on October 4, 2024, it was released in Japan, where it has now made history. Starring Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Srivastava, and Pratibha Ranta, the film has been running in Japanese theaters for over 115 days. Now, it has earned a nomination at the Japan Academy Film Prize. Kiran Rao’s film has secured its place among the five greatest international films.
Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies has surpassed 204 eligible films shortlisted for the Best International Film award. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film is competing against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Alex Garland’s Civil War, and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest.

Laapataa Ladies Dominates in Japan
Laapataa Ladies is currently in its 17th week in Japanese theaters and has been running successfully for 115 days. Out of the 204 eligible films released in Japan in 2024, it has been selected as one of the top five foreign films by the Japan Academy Film Prize. The winner for Best International Film will be announced on March 14.
