New Delhi: The pace of the monsoon has slowed significantly in many parts of the country, and it is considered to be on the verge of withdrawal, a process that typically begins to stir after September 15. Despite this impending withdrawal, monsoon rains continue to be generous. Weather conditions are set to deteriorate again in several states, potentially leading to spells of heavy rainfall.
On Friday, heavy rain alerts were issued for several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand. Weather conditions in Delhi-NCR are also expected to remain inclement. Here are the details regarding the states for which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall warnings.
Alerts for Torrential Rain in Several States
According to the Meteorological Department, warnings for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms have been issued for September 18, 2026, covering Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, rainfall warnings have been issued for Chhattisgarh, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The IMD has also warned of heavy rainfall in Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal for Friday. The department predicts heavy rainfall across the country over the next two days, which is expected to further boost monsoon rainfall totals.
Rainfall in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar
The IMD indicates that monsoon activity is likely to intensify in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Warnings for heavy rain have been issued for both states today; alerts are in place for 25 districts in UP and 18 districts in Bihar. The situation in both states is already critical due to surging water levels in the Ganges River, and residents in many areas have been advised to exercise caution.
Possibility of Rain in Himachal and Uttarakhand
According to the Meteorological Department, warnings regarding the season’s first snowfall have been issued for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. Snowfall was observed in the mountains of Manali and Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh, while the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed snowfall. Similarly, snowfall began at Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand, leading to reduced visibility. The Meteorological Department has also issued a rain alert for all three states today.
Rain Expected in These Parts of the Country Too
According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon is set to remain fully active over Northwest and Central India in the coming days. Monsoon winds are blowing in the region due to moisture originating from the Bay of Bengal, creating conditions favourable for rainfall. Thanks to good rainfall, the country has met its seasonal precipitation quota. Light mist has also begun to appear in some states during the morning hours.
