Google removed more than 11,000 YouTube channels in 2025 tied to China and Russia. Learn why Google is cracking down on propaganda networks. 34,000 channels removed so far this year

The video streaming website YouTube has seen over 11,000 channels and accounts deleted by Google. They are all charged with disseminating propaganda about Russia, China, and other nations.

The second quarter of 2025 (April–June) saw the implementation of this channel operation. In order to stop disinformation and influence operations, the business implemented this measure through Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG).

What is the whole issue?

According to Google, the greatest number of the deleted channels—7700 channels—were associated with China. These channels shared videos in Hindi, Chinese, and English that discussed American foreign policy and praised President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government.

Approximately 2,000 channels that supported Russia and denounced NATO, Ukraine, and Western nations were discovered to be affiliated with the country. These channels offered multilingual material.

Google also removed four advertising accounts, 20 YouTube channels, and one blogger page linked to Russia’s state-run media outlet RT (Russia Today) in May.

In order to provide news before the 2024 election, RT is alleged to have paid conservative influencers. Google’s efforts to combat misinformation (false information) include all of these measures.

This year, 34,000 channels have already been eliminated.

According to Google, these channels were a part of “Coordinated Influence Operations,” which means they were run methodically with a definite goal in mind.

While Russian channels disseminated propaganda against the Ukraine war and Western nations, Chinese channels worked to improve their nation’s image and target America.

They were located and taken from the platform by Google’s TAG team. Over 34,000 channels have been eliminated thus far in 2025, with over 23,000 accounts being deleted in the first quarter.

Additionally, channels from these nations were shut down.

Russia and China are not the only countries taking this step. Propaganda outlets from nations like Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Israel, Romania, and Ghana have reportedly been discovered.

While some of these attempted to influence geopolitical tensions like the Israel-Palestine war, others targeted political opponents. This demonstrates the extent to which disinformation has proliferated on digital platforms.

Ten million phony profiles were also eliminated by Meta.

Google is hardly the only one. Last week, Meta revealed that, in the first half of 2025, it had eliminated about 10 million phony profiles that were imitating well-known content producers.

Meta says this was done to avoid “spammy” content, so that real content could be pushed on Facebook and Instagram.
