New Delhi: The ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) has announced plans to stage a major protest against the Chief Election Commissioner at Jantar Mantar today, October 10. Ahead of the CJP’s protest, the government has turned the capital, Delhi, into a fortress. Fifty-seven metro stations across Delhi will remain completely closed until 6 PM.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has shared this information. The Delhi Police has not granted official permission for the CJP’s protest; consequently, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed in the New Delhi area.
Suspicious individuals have been detained in Delhi since Friday evening. The CJP has vowed to reach Jantar Mantar at any cost. Personnel from both the Delhi Police and central paramilitary forces have been deployed for security purposes.
Delhi Police Denies Permission for Protest
The Cockroach Janata Party has not received permission from the Delhi Police to hold the protest. In a statement issued a day earlier, the Delhi Police noted that while the event was scheduled for October 10, the CJP had submitted its application only on October 7, thereby failing to adhere to the prescribed deadline for such applications.
The police also cited alleged violations of rules during previous protests as a reason for their decision. Section 163 of the BNSS has been enforced in the New Delhi area, and the police have made it clear that strict legal action will be taken against anyone violating the regulations.
Delhi Gridlocked on Friday
On Friday evening, the day before the CJP protest,t Delhi was gripped by severe traffic congestion. Thousands of vehicles were stuck in jams across multiple routes. A massive traffic jam was reported on the Kalindi Kunj route connecting Delhi to Noida, with vehicles seen crawling between Sarita Vihar and Kalindi Kunj. Long queues of vehicles were also observed at the Delhi-Gurugram border. Thousands of vehicles remained stuck in traffic jams at the Sarhaul border, causing difficulties for commuters heading to Delhi and those returning home from work.
Route Diversions for Today
Due to the anticipated arrival of a large number of protesters in Delhi, traffic diversions and restrictions will be in effect on major routes starting at 6 AM today. Affected areas include the Shankar Road roundabout, Dhaula Kuan flyover, Jhandewalan roundabout, and Panchkuian roundabout, among others.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police has advised travellers heading towards railway stations, Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBT), or the airport via New Delhi and Central Delhi to set out with extra time to avoid any delays.
Security Personnel Deployed in Sansad Marg Area
Security measures have been tightened across Delhi in anticipation of potential protests by the CJP and other organisations. A large number of security personnel have been deployed in the Jantar Mantar and Sansad Marg areas, and barricades have been installed in both locations.
