New Delhi. Political turmoil has intensified over the lack of formal prorogation even after the conclusion of the monsoon session of Parliament. The Congress party has questioned the central government over this delay. The party asks why the prorogation process hasn’t been completed yet, given that Parliament was adjourned sine die on August 13th.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has raised this issue, questioning the government’s intentions. He says that typically, the prorogation process is completed within a short period of time after the House is adjourned sine die. Therefore, it’s natural to raise questions about the current delay.
The Congress party has also linked this entire matter to the delimitation issue. The party alleges that the government is preparing to introduce a constitutional amendment related to delimitation in Parliament in the future. The Congress has specifically questioned Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning whether the government is trying to garner the necessary support.
However, no official announcement has yet been made by the central government regarding a special session of Parliament or the imminent introduction of a new bill regarding delimitation. Therefore, these questions raised by the Congress appear to be based on political apprehension and opposition arguments.
Amidst this controversy, the issue of delimitation and women’s reservation has also come into discussion. Delimitation relates to the future redrawing of Lok Sabha seats. This process could impact the political representation of states. This is why various political parties have been continuously expressing their views on this issue.
The Congress demands that the current number of 543 Lok Sabha seats be maintained for a long time. The party wants a 33 percent reservation for women to be implemented within this existing framework. The Congress has also demanded that women’s reservation be implemented from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In fact, the question of delimitation is not limited to just the number of seats. If a future redistribution of seats based on population arises, it could impact the political power of individual states. For this reason, building political consensus on this issue is considered difficult.
Currently, Congress is demanding answers from the government regarding the delay in prorogation. Meanwhile, the picture regarding the government’s next strategy remains unclear.
All eyes are now on when the formal prorogation process is completed and whether any new steps regarding delimitation or women’s reservation will be taken in Parliament in the near future.
