But with each wish we make, could this digital genie be dulling our minds? The answer might be yes, according to a shocking new study conducted by researchers at MIT’s Media Lab. According to recent research, using AI technologies like ChatGPT excessively may be subtly impairing your memory, critical thinking, and even brain activity.
The study “The Cognitive Cost of Using LLMs,” which was published on arXiv, examines how language models, particularly ChatGPT, impact the brain’s capacity for thought, learning, and memory.
ChatGPT can be used by journalists to get ready for interviews. The software will generate additional questions based on the topics you have in mind for an interview topic. Additionally, the software can create questions based on an interviewee’s article or a previous interview.
You can use ChatGPT as a subeditor. Journalists can ask ChatGPT to edit their articles in a particular format, such as AP style, as a final review before sending them to their editor. Journalists should still examine and verify the updates made by ChatGPT, though, to make sure that no inaccurate information is included.
The long-term results were more dismal, even though the AI-powered group initially produced speedier results. When compared to their counterparts, students who relied on ChatGPT to write their essays showed lower scores, decreased brain activity, and worse memory recall. According to the researchers, “at all levels: cerebral, language, and scoring, the subjects in the LLM group did worse than their peers in the Brain-only group.”
ChatGPT’s future
Since ChatGPT is currently a relatively new tool, it is unclear how its parent firm, Open AI, will develop its business strategy. It is presently unclear how OpenAI will generate revenue, whether it will collaborate with Microsoft and its search engine, Bing, or develop its own advertising model similar to that of Google and Bing. Even though the program is free and available to everyone right now, any changes to its monetization could lead to further copyright-related concerns. For instance, despite ChatGPT being trained on all journalistic articles, the authors do not receive payment or acknowledgement for their work.
Despite its shortcomings, Google was still superior to ChatGPT.
It’s interesting to note that students who utilized Google produced more intelligent content and shown moderate brain activity compared to those who relied on ChatGPT. Those in the Brain-only group, on the other hand, demonstrated the highest levels of cognitive engagement, generating deeper insights and unique ideas. In contrast to the other groups that demonstrated increased engagement while adjusting to new tools, ChatGPT users’ brain activity remained suppressed even when they later tried to write without help.
