Hybrid cars are steadily gaining attention across global markets, and BYD is looking to capitalize on the trend with the launch of its new Dolphin G DM-i in Europe. The plug-in hybrid hatchback has been developed specifically for European buyers, offering a blend of modern styling, advanced technology, and fuel efficiency. Its standout feature is a claimed driving range of up to 1,000 km on a full tank and charge, making long-distance travel more convenient. The new model reflects BYD’s growing focus on hybrid vehicles, while the company is also preparing to introduce its first hybrid car in the Indian market next month.

DM-i Hybrid Technology

The new BYD Dolphin G DM-i brings the company’s well-known Dual Motor Intelligent (DM-i) hybrid technology to the European market. Measuring 4,160 mm in length, the compact hatchback will compete with popular B-segment models such as the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris. The DM-i system is designed to deliver a driving experience that feels close to a fully electric vehicle, while also offering the flexibility of a hybrid powertrain.

One of the biggest highlights of the Dolphin G DM-i is its impressive claimed driving range of more than 1,000 km. With a full fuel tank and a fully charged battery, drivers can cover long distances without frequent stops for refueling or charging. This extended range helps address one of the key concerns among car buyers and gives the model an advantage over many fully electric hatchbacks currently available in the market.

Battery and Engine

BYD has not yet revealed the official technical specifications of the Dolphin G DM-i, but industry expectations suggest that it could use a powertrain similar to the Atto 2 DM-i. The setup is likely to include a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a front-mounted electric motor and BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology. In this hybrid system, the petrol engine is expected to function mainly as a generator, supplying power to the battery when needed, while the electric motor handles most of the driving duties. This approach is designed to deliver smooth electric-like performance along with improved efficiency and extended driving range.

BYD’s upcoming Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hybrid for Europe will be manufactured at the company’s new production facility in Szeged, Hungary. Local manufacturing is expected to strengthen BYD’s position in the European market by reducing its reliance on imports and exports. The move will also help the company compete more effectively with established regional automakers.
