New Delhi: The committee constituted for the 8th Pay Commission is currently conducting a nationwide review. Consequently, central government employees and pensioners are likely to receive significant benefits. Ahead of the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, a surprising and welcome update regarding the calculation of employee bonuses has emerged.
Employee unions have urged the government to base the calculation of bonuses for central employees on the minimum salary fixed for each specific sector. If the central government accepts this proposal, employees would receive substantially higher bonuses in their accounts during festive seasons compared to the past, allowing them to celebrate with greater enthusiasm. Understanding the mathematics behind the bonus calculation can help clear up any confusion.

Understanding the Bonus Calculation Math
Central employees can easily grasp how bonuses are calculated. Currently, bonus calculations are based on a minimum salary threshold of ₹7,000. The employees’ federation has proposed that the minimum basic salary determined for each specific sector should instead serve as the basis for bonus payments.
Manjeet Singh Patel, National President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, explained that if the minimum salary is considered to be higher than ₹7,000, the bonus payout would be calculated based on that higher figure. For instance, if the bonus is calculated based on a minimum salary of ₹18,000, the total bonus amount would come to ₹17,763 (Calculation: 18,000 × 30 ÷ 30.4).
According to the formula proposed by Patel, the bonus calculation would vary depending on the employee’s pay level. For example, with a minimum basic pay of ₹18,000, the potential bonus under this formula would be ₹17,763. Similarly, for Pay Level 6, where the minimum basic pay is ₹35,400, the potential bonus using the same formula would amount to ₹34,934.

Details Shared via Post
Patel shared significant information in a post on the social media platform X. He stated that a request has already been made to fix the bonus amount at ₹27,694 under the pay commission framework. He further noted that even if the government decides to determine the bonus on its own terms, such a move could pave the way for better outcomes after a decade. Therefore, the government has been urged to use the minimum basic salary prescribed for each sector as the basis for calculating the bonus.
Meanwhile, the NC-JCM has also appealed to the central government to provide significant relief in view of the upcoming Dussehra festival. In a letter sent on August 27, 2026, the NC-JCM Secretary urged the government to issue orders for PLB (Productivity Linked Bonus), regular bonuses, or ad-hoc bonuses for the occasion. A demand has also been made to raise the bonus calculation ceiling from ₹7,000 to ₹21,000.
