Ashwini Sharma clarifies controversial remarks, demands Speaker’s decision based on fairness

Former Punjab BJP state president and Pathankot MLA Ashwini Sharma has written a detailed letter to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, urging him to take a fair and fact-based decision on the controversy surrounding him. He said that his statement given in the Assembly was presented out of its actual context, which created unnecessary controversy.

In his letter, Sharma clarified that he was responding to the allegations levelled by the Aam Aadmi Party against the Central government. During this time he gave the example of a popular rural Punjabi proverb. He says that the proverb was not used with the intention of insulting any person, community or woman, but only to clarify his argument.

Ashwini Sharma also said that before quoting the proverb he had used words like “vibha mavid” (with sincere apologies), which made it clear that he had no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments. He appealed to the Speaker to make an impartial assessment of the entire incident.

“Facts should be given importance, not one-sided politics,” a special appeal to the Speaker.

Ashwini Sharma stated in her letter that the Assembly is a forum for democratic debate, where every member has the right to express their views. He urged that any dispute should be decided on the basis of facts and thorough proceedings rather than political allegations.

He said that any statement should be evaluated in its entire context and not by isolating any one part. Sharma says that if his entire statement is seen, it will become clear that his intention was only to give a political response, not to hurt anyone’s dignity or sentiments.

At present, no public decision has been taken by the Assembly Speaker in this matter. Now everyone’s eyes are on what stand the Speaker takes on this representation and what will be the future outcome of this controversy in the proceedings of the Assembly.

Ashwini Sharma appeals to Assembly Speaker

What explanation did Ashwini Sharma give regarding his statement?

In his letter to the Assembly Speaker, Ashwini Sharma said that his statement was presented in the wrong context. He clarified that he was responding to the allegations levelled by the Aam Aadmi Party against the Central Government and cited a popular rural Punjabi proverb. According to him, it was only to clarify the argument and not to comment on any individual or community.

He also said that before using the proverb he used the words “Vibha Mavid” (with sincere apologies) to make it clear that he had no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments. Sharma says that after looking at his entire statement it becomes clear that his intention was only to give a political answer.

In his letter, he also stressed that any public statement should be assessed in its full context. If only a few words are looked at in isolation, it will be difficult to understand its real meaning and purpose.

Why was an appeal made to the Assembly Speaker for impartiality?

In his representation, Ashwini Sharma requested the Assembly Speaker to look at the entire matter not from a political perspective, but on the basis of facts and the entire proceedings of the House. He said that the credibility of democratic institutions remains intact only when all parties get equal opportunity and fair hearing.

He also said in his letter that the Assembly is a platform for democratic dialogue, where both the government and the opposition have the right to express their views. In such a situation, the statement of any member should be evaluated in its entire context, so that no misunderstanding or bias arises.

Sharma also indicated that one-sided political interpretation could weaken democratic traditions. Therefore, he requested the Speaker to take any decision only after an impartial review of the entire incident.

Now what can happen next in this entire controversy?

After the letter sent by Ashwini Sharma to the Speaker, the reaction of the Assembly Speaker in this matter is now being considered important. If the Speaker considers this representation, he may study the proceedings of the House, the relevant statements and the arguments of both the sides. Only after this can any kind of decision or comment come out.

Political analysts believe that in such cases, along with maintaining the dignity of the House, it is also necessary to maintain a balance between freedom of expression and parliamentary decorum. Therefore, the role of the Speaker is considered important in such disputes.

At present, political reactions are continuing on this entire matter. Now it remains to be seen what decision the Assembly Speaker takes on this representation and whether this dispute remains a subject of political debate or it is resolved through the institutional process.
