A high-level committee formed by the government has suggested major changes to toll tax rules. The committee has recommended that the Ministry of Road Transport either completely remove or significantly reduce the list of vehicles currently exempt from paying toll tax. The proposal is still under consideration, and no final decision has been made yet. According to an official, the government’s main aim is to reduce VIP culture and ensure equal treatment for everyone on the roads. Many people feel that government officers and other exempted vehicles crossing toll plazas for free is unfair, and the proposed changes are intended to address those concerns.

Fair and Transparent Toll System

Under the proposed toll policy, government employees may be encouraged to buy a FASTag Annual Pass instead of seeking toll exemptions. The Ministry of Road Transport has written to central and state government departments, asking them to consider this system. Employees will be able to claim reimbursement for the annual pass cost from their departments, similar to how mobile phone bills are reimbursed. Discussions are also underway with the defence forces to bring them into the new framework. The aim is to create a fair and transparent toll system while reducing special privileges and moving away from VIP culture on Indian highways.

Government Officials will have to pay toll charges

People traveling on National Highways may soon see a major change in toll rules. The central government is reportedly planning to reduce the number of vehicles that are exempt from paying toll tax. According to reports, the change could begin with senior officers of central and state governments, who may no longer be allowed to pass through toll plazas for free. If the proposal is approved, government officials will have to pay toll charges just like other road users. The move is aimed at reducing VIP culture, ensuring equal treatment for everyone, and making the toll collection system more transparent and fair.

The FASTag Annual Pass is a useful option for people who travel frequently on National Highways. For a one-time payment of ₹3,075, a vehicle can cross toll plazas up to 200 times in a year without paying toll charges separately for each trip. The pass remains valid for one year and helps make highway travel smoother and more convenient. Once the 200-trip limit is exhausted or the validity period ends, the pass can be renewed and used again. The scheme is expected to save time at toll plazas and offer a simpler, hassle-free travel experience for regular commuters.
