On Mokshada Ekadashi 2025, it is customary to observe a fast, worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, and narrate the fasting story. Let’s learn about the fasting story – In ancient times, a powerful and religious king named Vaikhanas ruled the city of Champa. His subjects were very happy, and there was happiness and prosperity all around. He was a king who knew all four Vedas and loved justice. One day, the king dreamed that his deceased father was suffering terrible torture in hell and pleading for his salvation. The king was deeply saddened and distraught by this dream.

In the morning, he summoned all the wise Brahmins and ministers of his kingdom, told them about his dream, and asked them how to find relief from this suffering. The Brahmins told him that a short distance away was the ashram of Parvat Muni, a sage with a vision of the past, present, and future. Upon hearing this, the king immediately set out for Parvat Muni’s ashram. Upon reaching Parvat Muni’s ashram, he prostrated before the sage and recounted his dream of seeing his father suffering in hell. The king remarked that a son’s life is meaningless if he cannot save his parents.

Hearing this, Parvat Muni closed his eyes and, through his yogic powers, learned everything about the king’s father’s deeds. He said, “Your father had caused your mother great suffering in his life, which is why she is suffering in hell. Now, you should observe the Mokshada Ekadashi fast on the Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month, following the prescribed rituals, and offer all the merits gained from this fast to your father.

This will free him from hell.” As the sage had instructed, the king, along with his family, observed the Mokshada Ekadashi fast with complete devotion and faith. At the end of the fast, he offered the fruits of this fast to his father. Due to the virtuous effects of this fast, the king’s father was freed from hell and attained heaven. On his way to heaven, he said to his son, “May you be blessed, son.”

On the day of Mokshada Ekadashi, whoever observes this fast with devotion, reads and listens to the story, all his sins are washed away, all his wishes are fulfilled and he attains salvation.
