As soon as the month of Sawan begins, the name of Shiva starts echoing in all Shiva temples, and chants of Rudrabhishekam and “Bam Bhole” can be heard everywhere. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva with true devotion in the month of Sawan pleases Him, fulfilling all the desires of His devotees and bestowing His divine grace upon them. Along with Lord Shiva, worshiping Goddess Parvati on this day also holds special significance.

According to the Panchang, the month of Sawan 2026 this year begins on July 30, 2026 (Thursday) and will conclude on August 28, 2026 (Friday) on the occasion of Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

There will be four Sawan Somwars (Mondays) this year —

  • First Sawan Somwar: August 3, 2026
  • Second Sawan Somwar: August 10, 2026
  • Third Sawan Somwar: August 17, 2026
  • Fourth Sawan Somwar: August 24, 2026

Significance of Sawan 2026 Month

Sawan 2026

According to mythological legends, the month of Sawan has great religious and spiritual importance. During the war between the gods and demons (Devasura Sangram) and the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the lethal Halahal poison emerged. To save the universe from the destructive effects of this poison, Lord Shiva consumed it and held it in His throat. As a result of the poison’s effect, the Lord experienced an intense burning sensation. To cool and calm this burning heat, all the deities offered cold water to Mahadev. Ever since, offering water and Holy Ganga water to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan has been a tradition.

It is also believed that in the month of Sawan, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Therefore, unmarried women and men worship and perform penance to Lord Shiva to seek a desired life partner and obtain His divine blessings.

Worshiping Lord Shiva during Sawan pleases Him, but if you perform it with true devotion and according to proper rituals, it brings extremely auspicious results. Let us know the worship method to please Lord Shiva:

  1. You should wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. After this, take a pledge (Sankalp) for the fast and worship.
  2. Visit the home temple or a nearby Shiva temple and offer water to Lord Shiva using a copper pot. Following this, offer raw milk and Ganga water using a silver or bronze vessel.
  3. Offer Lord Shiva His favorite items such as Belpatra (Bael leaves), Dhatura, Bhang, Shami leaves, Akshat (unbroken rice grains), and white sandalwood paste.
  4. During this process, continuously chant “Om Namah Shivaya” or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, or recite the Shiva Chalisa.
  5. After this, offer Bhog (food offerings) of fruits and sweets to the Lord, light a lamp of pure desi ghee, and perform the Lord’s Aarti.
