Pitru Paksha 2025

An important time in Hindu tradition for honoring ancestors is Pitru Paksha, also called Shraddh Paksha. Pitru Paksha will take place in 2025 from September 7 to September 21. Hindus thank their ancestors and ask for their blessings on these days by performing rituals and offerings (Shradh and Tarpan).

Why does Pitru Paksha last for fifteen days?

Pitru Paksha is observed for 15 days during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, which coincides with the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon). Hindus believe that every ancestor who left on a certain tithi might be remembered and honored on that day. Each day of this fortnight corresponds to a tithi, or lunar day.

This guarantees that all of the forefathers are included in the rites without anyone being left out. The souls of ancestors are said to descend to the terrestrial realm during these 15 days in order to receive food, water, and prayers from their descendants. Families pray for the welfare of their ancestry, show appreciation, and ask for pardon by fervently following the traditions.

The primary rites include feeding Brahmins, cows, birds, or the less fortunate, as well as making Tarpan (water offerings) and Pinda Daan (rice offerings). Usually, dishes like seasonal vegetables, puri, and kheer are prepared and served. It is also common to observe abstinence, generosity, and simplicity at this time since it is regarded as a time for introspection and family responsibilities.

Pitru Paksha lasts for 15 days, symbolizing inclusion and ensuring that all ancestors, regardless of when they left, are remembered with love and devotion. It emphasizes the Hindu belief in the continuation of life and existence beyond death and strengthens the bonds between generations.
