UPI collection request will be stopped.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the organization that created India’s immensely popular Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has made a significant announcement in an effort to combat financial scams.

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which serves as the foundation for digital transactions, will undergo a major update beginning August 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made these adjustments to make UPI safer, more effective, and able to manage steadily increasing transaction volumes.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) “collect requests” will no longer be accepted by banks and payment apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm as of October 1, 2025.

The goal of this ruling is to shield millions of UPI users from scammers who take advantage of this feature to fool customers into approving payments.

For you, what is changing?

You won’t be able to use UPI to send or receive collect requests to friends or relatives as of October 1, 2025. You must ask the other individual to start the payment process if you are owed money.

However, payment processors such as Flipkart, Amazon, Swiggy, or IRCTC will continue to operate in the same manner. These applications will send a collect request to your UPI app when you make an online purchase or purchase a ticket, which you can authorize using your PIN.

A collect request?

One user can seek payment from another using the “collect request” or “pull transaction” capability. For instance, you may send a collect request to remind your friend to pay you for dinner. The funds arrive in your account as soon as they authorize and input their UPI PIN.

This function is frequently used by scammers to trick users into sending money by pretending to be friends, banks, or even government representatives.

In order to address this, NPCI announced that the UPI P2P collect feature would no longer be able to be processed in UPI as of October 1, 2025. This implies that people will no longer exchange collect requests.

This capability can still be used to accept payments by businesses, such as food delivery apps or internet retailers.
