MLC SALARY

New Delhi: The counting of votes for the 2026 Legislative Council (MLC) elections in Bihar is underway, drawing the attention of all political parties. A commotion broke out in Patna during the counting process, with reports of scuffles between the public and police personnel. The fate of 150 candidates is being decided in Bihar: 90 from the graduate quota and 60 from the teachers’ quota.

Counting is currently taking place for a total of 8 Legislative Council seats. Naturally, there is significant interest regarding the salaries of Legislative Council members (MLCs), with active discussions taking place everywhere about the pay and allowances they receive. It is worth noting that MLC salaries and allowances are not uniform across the country.

State governments determine these figures according to their own rules and regulations. Generally, the salary and allowances of an MLC are equivalent to those of a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the same state. Further details on this can be found in the article below.

What are the salary levels in UP and Maharashtra?

According to a report, MLCs in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra receive some of the highest remuneration, with monthly earnings ranging between approximately ₹2.5 lakh and ₹2.96 lakh. Uttar Pradesh sits at the higher end of this spectrum, with monthly earnings between ₹2.66 lakh and ₹2.96 lakh. In UP, the basic monthly salary is ₹35,000; however, when additional components such as constituency and medical allowances are included, the total amount increases significantly.

The difference between the basic salary and the total monthly earnings is accounted for by these various allowances. In Maharashtra, the total monthly remuneration, including salary and allowances, reaches approximately ₹2.52 lakh. Additionally, MLCs in Telangana also receive a substantial salary, earning around ₹2.50 lakh per month. Based on these figures, these three states rank among those offering the highest remuneration to MLCs.

This includes a basic salary of up to ₹50,000, along with a constituency allowance and an allowance for a personal assistant. A comparison across these states reveals that the total monthly remuneration in Bihar is lower than that in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra.

Travel and Daily Allowances

In addition to their monthly salary, members of the Legislative Council receive several other benefits. These include annual complimentary travel coupons for train and air journeys, which can be valued between ₹3 lakh and ₹4.25 lakh.
