New Delhi: Most companies in the country deduct PF contributions based on their employees’ salaries. The objective is to build a PF corpus for the employees’ future. This allows employees to withdraw funds during adverse situations. Often, money is needed unexpectedly for medical emergencies, children’s education, or home construction. In such instances, the PF amount acts as a boon, saving the employee from distress.
PF employees can easily make partial withdrawals. Under the new rules, employees can withdraw up to 75% of their PF balance. The remaining 25% must be retained as a minimum balance. Limits on withdrawal amounts, tenure of service, and the frequency of withdrawals will depend on the specific category of need.

The EPFO has implemented this new framework for partial withdrawals effective July 1, 2026. Detailed information regarding the rules and application process is available on the official EPFO website: https://www.epfindia.gov.in/.
Know the changes made to the PF withdrawal rules.
Previously, there were multiple rules for partial PF withdrawals based on various needs, and understanding the eligibility criteria and withdrawal conditions was often complex. These new rules have been categorised into three main groups. A common question arises: if an employee has a balance of ₹1 lakh, how much can they easily withdraw?
According to the rules, one can withdraw up to a maximum of 75% of the PF balance. Employees are required to retain a minimum of 25% of the amount as savings. The specific value of this 25% is not fixed; it is determined based on the eligible PF balance. Additionally, the actual withdrawal amount will depend on the conditions and eligibility criteria associated with the specific category.

How many times can money be withdrawn in each category?
The question arises regarding how many times withdrawals can be made within each category. Withdrawals are permitted under categories such as medical needs, education, and marriage. Applications for withdrawal in these cases can be submitted after completing a minimum of 12 months of service. For medical reasons, one can withdraw from the PF account up to three times in a single financial year.
For educational purposes, withdrawals are allowed up to a maximum of 10 times over the entire tenure of membership. Withdrawals for marriage are permitted up to a maximum of five times during the entire membership period. Even for these needs, specific terms and conditions regarding withdrawal limits apply; therefore, merely being eligible does not guarantee that the entire accumulated balance in the account can be withdrawn.
Separately, regarding rules for purchasing or constructing a home or repaying a home loan: if you wish to use your PF funds to buy a house or a plot, construct a home, or repay a home loan, there is a provision for withdrawal under the ‘housing’ category. Funds can also be withdrawn subject to specific conditions for home repairs, improvements, or renovations. A minimum membership period of 12 months is required for these purposes.
