New Delhi: It was initially expected that all financial operations would come to a standstill due to a three-day bank strike, but welcome news has emerged: the nationwide strike has been called off. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) announced this late Sunday night, bringing relief to the general public. This decision followed a meeting held at 9:30 PM on Sunday between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the UFBU.

Both parties discussed the long-pending demand for making all Saturdays holidays for bank employees, as well as other issues raised by the unions. With the strike averted, it is crucial for you to know whether banks will remain open or closed today; having this information ensures you won’t face any inconvenience.

With the three-day strike postponed, banks will operate normally today. Operations in all public and private sector banks will continue as usual. Had the UFBU persisted with the strike despite the meeting with the IBA, banking operations would have come to a complete halt. However, an agreement was reached on certain points during the late-night meeting between the IBA and the UFBU, leading to the immediate postponement of the strike.

What did the UFBU say?

According to the news agency PTI, the UFBU stated that the decision to defer the strike was made following assurances from the IBA regarding theunion’s’ demands. A high-level committee comprising the IBA and the UFBU will now be formed to discuss the demand for declaring all Saturdays as holidays. This committee will consider potential options and work with all stakeholders to find a mutually acceptable solution that also safeguards the interests of bank customers.

Insights on the PLI Scheme Discussion

During the meeting, bank unions raised the issue of the Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for officers at Scale IV and above. According to a statement by the UFBU, discussions with the IBA regarding the PLI scheme can now be initiated. Unions and associations want modifications made to the scheme to address their concerns before any proposal is submitted to the government.

Meanwhile, the UFBU stated that all parties would also discuss other pending issues recorded in the minutes of the March 8, 2024 meeting. The expectation is that these discussions will focus on resolving the remaining matters as soon as possible. It is worth noting that bank strikes disrupt the financial activities of the general public. However, online transaction facilities remain operational.
