New Delhi: The 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are set to be crucial for all political parties. From the NDA to the INDIA bloc, preparations are already underway. Seat-sharing remains a major topic of discussion for both key alliances. Within the INDIA bloc, a consensus on seat allocation between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress does not appear to be emerging.
Meanwhile, seat-sharing is a significant issue within the NDA as well. NDA ally Janata Dal (United) has announced plans to contest 60 seats in Uttar Pradesh independently. Discussions are ongoing within the party regarding Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar’s Health Minister and former CM Nitish Kumar, launching the election campaign from Varanasi on October 25.
Everyone is already formulating strategies for the UP elections. JDU spokesperson Kunwar Ajay Singh stated that the party is fully gearing up to contest the elections in UP. They are confident of securing a respectable number of seats within the NDA alliance and have already commenced preparations.
Election Campaign to Kick Off from Varanasi
Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Health Minister and former CM Nitish Kumar, is set to launch the UP election campaign from Varanasi on October 25. He will participate in a JDU conference there, where the party is expected to present its proposal regarding the upcoming elections. Ajay Singh indicated that the decision to contest the UP elections could be formally announced on that day, noting that the party is strongly prepared to contest 60 seats. He expressed confidence that they would secure seats within the NDA.
Chirag Paswan Has Also Made a Claim
Chirag Paswan’s party, a BJP ally in Bihar, has also announced its intention to enter the electoral fray in UP. While the BJP currently has alliances with four parties in UP, allies from Bihar are now also seeking to establish a presence in the state. This could create a major challenge for the BJP regarding seat-sharing.
Allies are already exerting pressure regarding seat allocation, and the JDU’s demand is likely to further increase the BJP’s concerns. However, the BJP has not yet made any statement regarding how many seats will be allocated to its allies. An announcement regarding this is likely to be made before the elections. It remains to be seen what stance the BJP adopts regarding the JDU’s demand.
No Consensus Yet Between SP and Congress
In the UP elections, the SP and the Congress, two major constituents of the INDIA alliance,e are gearing up to enter the electoral fray together. However, a consensus on seat-sharing has not yet emerged between the two; the SP is not agreeable to the Congress’s demands.
According to sources, the SP is considering allocating a total of 60 to 65 seats to the Congress. In contrast, the Congress is staking a claim to over 100 seats, based on the formula used in 2017.
