Flyover to ease Delhi traffic congestion at Terminal-1 intersection
The Public Works Department (PWD) is working on a plan to build a new flyover near Terminal-1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport to improve traffic flow. This flyover is proposed around the intersection where Dwarka Road and Ullan Butter Road meet. This area is located near the NSG headquarters.
According to a senior PWD official, apart from passengers travelling to and from the airport, the area also faces traffic pressure due to VIP movement. During busy hours, the number of vehicles at the intersection increases, leading to traffic jams.
The proposed flyover aims to improve vehicular movement at this intersection and reduce traffic conflicts at the road level. However, final technical details related to the project are yet to be revealed.
Increasing Delhi traffic at the junction of Dwarka Road and Ullan Butar Road
Located near Terminal-1, this junction is one of the important traffic routes in southwest Delhi. From here, vehicles going towards the airport and Dwarka as well as traffic from the surrounding areas also pass.
According to the PWD, the traffic pressure in the area is not limited to just normal vehicular movement. Airport-related traffic and VIP movement also often put additional pressure on the traffic system.
For this reason, the department is working on the possibility of a flyover as an alternative to the existing arrangement at this junction. Its design and alignment will be finalized after a technical study.

Delhi Airport passengers may find relief.
Terminal 1 is a vital part of Delhi Airport and is a frequent source of passenger and vehicle traffic throughout the day. In case of traffic jam on the surrounding roads, the travel time of people reaching the airport may also be affected.
A plan is being considered to divert the main traffic over the junction through a proposed flyover. This can provide space under the road for vehicles coming from local and other directions.
However, the extent of traffic impact after completion of the project will depend on its final design and traffic management plan. At present, PWD is taking the proposal forward at the technical level.
The area is also important because it is near the NSG headquarters.
The proposed flyover is located near the NSG headquarters. This area is also sensitive from security point of view and along with normal traffic, special movement also takes place here.
PWD officials have mentioned the flyover plan considering the traffic pressure in the area. The official website of NSG also provides information about the organisation’s headquarters and its activities.
While planning any major road project in this area, traffic safety and existing road infrastructure will have to be taken into consideration. For this reason, studying the technical aspects of the project will be important.

Several PWD projects to ease traffic in Delhi
The plan for a flyover near Terminal-1 comes amid a series of PWD initiatives aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Delhi’s busy areas. Earlier, the department had also started feasibility studies on the possibilities of elevated roads and underpasses in different areas.
Another plan of PWD includes a proposal for an elevated road of about 8 km from Rani Jhansi Road to Punjabi Bagh West Metro Station. Apart from this, a plan for feasibility study of about 500 meter long underpass in Mayur Vihar was also revealed.
The final shape of these projects will be decided based on technical studies, traffic needs and proposed alignment. Therefore, it would be premature to consider every scheme as a project that has received approval for construction.
The next focus will be on the design and alignment of the flyover.
The most important task facing the PWD now will be to determine the appropriate alignment and design for the proposed flyover. For this, the existing road network, number of vehicles and traffic pattern at the junction will be studied.
In the earlier projects of the department also, the alignment and traffic needs have been assessed through feasibility study. The Terminal-1 proposal will also require similar technical assessment.
It is not yet clear what the length, cost and construction timeline of the flyover will be. After this information comes to light, the complete picture of the project will become clear.

A new step toward Delhi traffic resolution near Terminal-1
The proposed flyover at the Terminal-1 intersection aims to streamline traffic around the airport. The PWD is considering this option in view of the increasing pressure on the junction of Dwarka Road and Ullan Butter Road.
Clear information regarding its construction and timeline will emerge only after the technical studies and further approvals related to the project are completed. At present it is being seen as a proposed infrastructure project for traffic improvement.
If the plan goes ahead, passengers travelling towards Terminal-1 as well as those travelling on this route daily may benefit from the changes in the traffic system in the future.
