Leaders from BRICS nations, their associates, and special guests are gathering in New Delhi. Under India’s leadership, the theme for this summit focuses on resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.
Simply put, the theme embodies a “humanity-first spirit. Alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the summit is being attended by key global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the presidents of Iran, South Africa, and Egypt.
PM Modi’s Major Appeal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant appeal at the BRICS summit. He called for equal participation of the Global South in formulating global regulations concerning AI, cyberspace, outer space, biotechnology, and critical technologies. He further stated that BRICS should assist the Global South in transitioning from being mere rule-followers to rule-makers.
BRICS is Not Against Anyone
Over the past two decades, BRICS has carved out a distinct identity on the global stage. This summit is poised to be a historic milestone. BRICS is not opposed to any specific entity. PM Modi also proposed a 10-point roadmap for global governance at the summit, emphasising that reforms to the UN Security Council can no longer be delayed.
Focus Needed on Making the Global South ‘Rule-Makers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that ensuring international participation in future rule-making is crucial. Technologies such as AI and other critical innovations are shaping future policies and regulations; therefore, we must focus on enabling the Global South to become ‘rule-makers.’ Modi emphasised that this BRICS summit, held under India’s presidency, should send a clear message: if our future is shared, then everyone should have a say in shaping it.
He further added that the resolve for ‘BRICS@20’ must be to move “from raising voices to making an impact, and from privilege to partnership.” He noted that the current structure of global governance resembles a pyramid, where power and decision-making authority are concentrated at the top, while the lower tiers comprise nations that are affected by these decisions yet lack the ability to shape them.
