The troubles of 20 MPs who separated from Trinamool Congress (TMC) and joined NCPI seem to be increasing. Let us tell you that during the hearing of the Supreme Court, notice was issued to 20 rebels and now the news is coming that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has also issued notice to these rebels and given them a 7-day ultimatum.
Let us tell you that this matter is related to the petition filed by TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee. Abhishek Banerjee first asked Birla to take action against the 20 rebels, claiming their disqualification was being questioned and that their membership should be revoked. However, Birla took no action or response for a long time, prompting Abhishek to approach the Supreme Court.
The TMC alleges that these MPs, who won on its ticket, have decided to leave the party and join another political organization. The party has cited this as grounds for action under the anti-defection law and filed separate petitions in the Supreme Court.
The matter reached the Supreme Court.
When Birla refused to hold a hearing, Abhishek Banerjee took the dispute over the membership of the 20 MPs to the Supreme Court. Abhishek Banerjee approached the Supreme Court, demanding a speedy and timely decision on the disqualification petitions pending before the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
On August 25, the Supreme Court issued notices to 20 MPs during its hearing. The court also raised the issue of whether disqualification proceedings cannot be delayed indefinitely. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central Government, informed the court that the Speaker’s office had issued notices to the MPs. This notice required the rebels to submit their responses within seven days.
Birla gave seven days.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat’s action following the Supreme Court hearing has given the case a new direction. According to reports, separate notices have been sent to 20 MPs, asking them to explain their stance within seven days. The remaining MPs are now scheduled to submit their answers within seven days.
These MPs include:
- Yusuf Pathan,
- Sayani Ghosh,
- Dev (also known as Deepak Adhikari),
- Shatabdi Roy,
- Rachna Banerjee, and several other prominent figures. All MPs will now have to explain their constitutional and political basis for leaving the TMC and joining the NCPI. Whether action will be taken against them under the party-change law will be determined only after the rebels respond.
