Supreme Court directs Tarun Tejpal to surrender within two weeks

The Supreme Court has directed journalist and former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal to surrender within two weeks in a 2013 rape case. The case involves allegations of rape leveled by a former female colleague and has been a legal proceeding in various courts for several years. Tejpal was acquitted by the trial court in the case in August 2021, but the decision was later challenged and the matter reached the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court.

The court in 2021 overturned the trial court’s acquittal of Tarun Tejpal and convicted him and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. After this decision of the High Court, the case once again attracted national attention.

The case has had a long legal process between the trial court’s acquittal and the High Court’s conviction. The prosecution’s appeal was heard in the High Court and the court, after considering the available records and the legal aspects of the case, reversed the trial court’s finding. Following this decision, Tejpal moved the Supreme Court for further legal relief.
