New Delhi: Heart-wrenching news has emerged from Amravati, Maharashtra an incident so shocking it would make anyone shudder. A massive fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the district women’s hospital on Monday, tragically claiming the lives of three newborns. Preliminary reports suggest the fire was triggered by a suspected explosion in a ventilator.
The flames were so intense that it was difficult to even stand near them; the sight was truly harrowing. People were seen scrambling to escape the blaze, and extinguishing it required immense effort. The deaths of the newborns plunged the hospital into chaos and grief, leaving everyone in tears.
Chaos Erupts as Fire Breaks Out
The fire erupted around 3:30 PM in the NICU located on the third floor of the hospital. Sparks from a suspected ventilator explosion rapidly escalated into a massive inferno. Doctors, nurses, and staff on duty immediately threw themselves into rescue operations. At the time the fire broke out, 39 newborns were admitted to the ward.
As smoke filled the ward, efforts to evacuate the infants began. Despite the challenging circumstances, many babies were successfully rescued; however, three newborns tragically lost their lives after suffering severe burns. The heart-wrenching scene left everyone deeply shaken. Six other infants were injured in the incident and have been admitted to a super-specialty hospital for treatment.
Tensions ran high at the hospital following the incident. Rescue teams and staff worked swiftly to move the infants to safety, while the fire was eventually brought under control after strenuous efforts.
Police Investigating the Cause of the Fire
News of the fire at the Amravati hospital caused immediate alarm among local authorities. A team of police officers rushed to the scene and is now working to determine the cause of the blaze. The police and hospital administration are working to determine the cause of the explosion in the ventilator. Are these ventilators not checked regularly?

39 newborns were admitted at the time of the fire
It is worth noting that when the fire broke out on the third floor of the Amravati District Women’s Hospital, 39 newborns were undergoing treatment. Each of the rooms housed 13 newborns, and the fire started in one of these rooms.
There were a total of 12 babies in the NICU at the time. The Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) is dedicated to treating premature, low-birth-weight, and critically ill infants; this unit had become operational only about a year ago.
