New Delhi: The Israeli government has taken a step that has drawn opposition from several countries. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has decided to issue a tender for the construction of settlements comprising approximately 1,200 homes in the West Bank. Western nations have expressed strong objections regarding this Israeli-occupied territory in the West Bank.
Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada have issued a joint statement on the matter. For decades, Israel had maintained a complete ban on construction plans in the E1 area; however, work is now underway on a plan to build 1,200 homes there.

Under international law, all such settlements are considered illegal. Furthermore, Palestinians argue that this move will deal a blow to hopes for a two-state solution. It would not only split the West Bank into two parts but also leave East Jerusalem significantly isolated.
What did European nations say about the E1 settlement project?
The joint statement from Western nations declared that the Israeli government’s decision to issue a tender for the E1 settlement project is entirely unacceptable. The seven nations unanimously stated that expanding settlements in E1 could fragment the West Bank and compromise the territorial contiguity of Palestinian areas.
The statement issued on Thursday by European allies and Canada highlighted the prevailing instability in the West Bank, noting acts of violence committed by settlers against civilians.
It further noted that the decision is particularly concerning given the severe restrictions facing the Palestinian economy. The statement added that these plans would not only move the region further away from peace but also undermine Israel’s global image.

What did the United Nations say?
The United Nations Secretary-General has also issued a statement regarding this matter. The Secretary-General stated that the E1 plan poses a major existential threat to Palestine. The Belgian Foreign Minister has echoed this sentiment. Earlier on Thursday, Israel’s Foreign Minister categorically rejected criticism voiced by the British Foreign Minister.
Here are the details of the issue
It is worth noting that following the occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the Middle East conflict, Israel has established approximately 160 settlements. These are home to 700,000 Jewish residents. Alongside these settlements, about 3.3 million Palestinians also reside in the area. Despite international opposition, successive Israeli governments have authorised the expansion of these settlements. Israel has been a focal point of global attention regarding this region, and its decision is now facing widespread opposition. All eyes are now on what Israel’s next move will be.
