New Delhi: Heart-wrenching news has emerged from Indonesia. Five people lost their lives after a passenger ship suddenly caught fire near Madura Island. Forty-one people are reported missing, and rescue operations are underway. Officials believe the death toll could rise. There were 271 passengers and crew members on board the vessel.
By the afternoon, 225 people had been rescued. Efforts to locate and save the missing individuals are ongoing, with rescue teams actively engaged in relief operations. The incident has raised serious questions. Several vessels have been deployed to assist in the rescue mission.

Vessels deployed for rescue
According to the latest information, the ship was travelling from Surabaya in East Java province to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire suddenly broke out near Madura Island, off the northeastern coast of Java. Officials are conducting a search operation in the surrounding waters to locate those who were on board. All eyes are now on how many more people can be safely rescued.
A tragic incident occurred last year as well.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. This incident follows a massive ship fire in Indonesia a year ago. In July 2025, a passenger ship caught fire near North Sulawesi province, resulting in three immediate fatalities.
Amidst the administrative rescue efforts, 150 people were saved. That vessel was named KM Barcelona 5 and carried 280 people; the incident took place on July 19 near the capital, Manado.
Such accidents are frequent in Indonesia
It is worth noting that such accidents are becoming increasingly common in Indonesia. Earlier, in 2021, a fire broke out on the KM Karya Indah in the Molucca Sea shortly after it departed from Ternate. During this harrowing incident, passengers and crew members were forced to jump into the water.
A total of 181 passengers, including 22 children and 14 crew members, were rescued with the help of authorities and local fishing boats. Such accidents are considered common in Indonesia, which is the world’s largest archipelagic nation, comprising over 17,000 islands.

Panic Erupts as Fire Breaks Out
Everyone was left stunned when a fire broke out on a vessel carrying passengers. Panic ensued, with screams filling the air as passengers scrambled to save their lives. People could be seen running frantically in all directions, desperate to find a way to survive. At one point, it seemed as though no one would make it out alive; however, the prompt action of the rescue team ensured that the maximum number of people were rescued. Intensive efforts are currently underway to locate those who are still missing.
