New Delhi: Significant changes to various rules have come into effect on August 1st. These changes will directly impact the common man’s budget. The updates cover a range of areas, from LPG cylinder prices to rail travel and tax filing. It has long been customary for rules affecting the general public, not just the calendar, to change on the first day of the month.
If you want to stay informed about these new rules, don’t delay; a lack of awareness could lead to unnecessary trouble. You can review the details of the revised rules below.

Change in Commercial Cylinder Prices
August 1st brought relief to gas cylinder consumers. Indian oil marketing companies reduced the price of commercial gas cylinders by up to ₹200. Customers across various cities can now purchase them at these lower rates. However, there has been no change in the prices of domestic LPG cylinders.
New Token System for Ticket Booking
Indian Railways has also introduced rule changes. A new system for ‘Tatkal’ ticket booking came into effect on August 1st to make the process smoother. Token distribution at reservation counters will now begin at the same time as the Tatkal booking window opens. Previously, passengers had to stand in separate queues just to get a token; the new system eliminates the hassle of jostling and overcrowding. Additionally, Aadhaar-based verification has been made mandatory to curb online booking bots and black-market activities.
Penalty for Income Tax Filing
The deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2026-27 applicable to salaried employees and non-audit taxpayers was July 31, 2026. Those who failed to file their ITR by this date may now have to pay a late fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act.

Changes in Banking Rules
Major changes are also taking place regarding banking and investment regulations. Starting today, August 1st, banks and insurance companies are implementing the CKYC 2.0 (Central KYC) system in a phased manner. Account holders will be issued a unique 14-digit CKYC number, eliminating the need to repeatedly submit identity and address proofs to various financial institutions.
Meanwhile, banks across different states in the country will remain closed for a total of 14 days in August, accounting for Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, and weekends (Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays). Additionally, several banks may implement changes to their credit card rules regarding reward points, annual fees, and service charges starting August 1st.
