Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz. Following US President Donald Trump’s warning that Iranian bridges and power plants could be targeted, Iran has issued a stern response. Iran’s Foreign Minister has explicitly warned the US; details of his statement are provided below.
Iran’s Warning to the US
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated clearly that any attack on Iran’s infrastructure would be met with a response based on an “eye-for-an-eye” policy. This follows Donald Trump’s threat that if Iran attacked ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a power plant or bridge in Tehran would be destroyed in retaliation.
Araghchi also wrote on the social media platform X that Iran’s defence doctrine is crystal clear: an eye for an eye. He stated that any attack on Iran, even one targeting its infrastructure,e would draw a devastating and severe response.
He further warned that any country or party assisting in such attacks would also become a legitimate target for Iran. This reaction from Iran follows US President Donald Trump’s statement that if Iran attempted to block the movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the US would destroy its bridges and power plants.
Threat to Close the Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s military command and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have previously issued warnings regarding this matter. According to Iranian media, the Khatam-al-Anbiya Central Headquarters stated that if the US attacked Iran’s infrastructure, the global oil supply passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be completely cut off. The military command stated that any vessel would be permitted to pass only in accordance with the routes and regulations prescribed by Iran.
Warning of harm to US allies as well
The IRGC has warned that it would inflict damage not only on the US but also on its allies. The force’s commander, Brigadier General Seyed Majid Mousavi, warned the US that if Iranian bridges or power plants were targeted, US allies in the region would face a power crisis. He further stated that the consequences of any attack on Iran’s power plants and bridges would be felt immediately.
In short, if the US attacks Iran’s infrastructure, the situation in the Middle East could spiral out of control. Iran could intensify its attacks by targeting US allies.
