Birth and death certificates are documents of great importance. A new update regarding them has now been released. The Central Government has issued new rules concerning birth and death certificates. These changes have been introduced to ensure stricter regulation and oversight. According to reports, the Registrar General of India has issued orders to all states to implement these new regulations.
If your child’s birth certificate has not been obtained within one year of birth, you will now need to secure specific permission from the District Magistrate (DM) or Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). In other words, the birth certificate cannot be issued without the authorization of the DM or SDM. The government has now mandated the implementation of these rules.
What exactly has changed?
Previously, the rules governing birth registration after a one-year delay were different; however, new regulations have now been introduced.
Let us first look at the old rules: previously, approval from senior officials was required only if the registration was delayed by 10 years or more. The rules have now been modified.
Regarding the new rules: the timeframe for requiring higher-level approval has been significantly reduced. If your child’s birth certificate was not obtained within the first year and you are applying for registration after that period, a new procedural process will apply, and the birth certificate will be issued only after this process is completed.
New rules for private hospitals
Under the new regulations, changes have also been made to the documentation requirements for babies born in private hospitals. • Under the new regulations, if you are obtaining a birth or death certificate for an event that occurred at a private hospital, mandatory registration must be completed within 21 days of the birth or death; appointments will not be available after this 21-day period.
- Failure by private hospitals to provide this information will result in legal action, in accordance with strict government directives.
This new rule aims to curb fraud.
The government has fully digitized this process to completely eliminate fraudulent practices.
The government has also stated that centers or units reporting a high volume of births or deaths will be subject to thorough scrutiny.
So, if your child has just been born, make sure to get their birth certificate made before they turn one year old; if the birth took place in a private hospital, the registration for the birth certificate should be completed within 21 days, and this is the hospital’s responsibility.
