This year’s July collection has seen an increase of ₹11,000 crore when compared to June. Last month, the indirect tax collections amounted to ₹1.85 lakh crore. In April 2025, a record ₹2.37 lakh crore and in May ₹2.01 lakh crore were collected under GST.

Eight years of GST have passed

Last month marked the eighth anniversary of GST’s introduction in the nation. This well-known indirect tax was launched on July 1, 2017. In the 2024-25 financial year, the total GST collection reached ₹22.08 lakh crore, which was only ₹11.37 lakh crore five years prior, in 2020-21.

This indicates that tax revenue has nearly doubled over the past five years. In 2024-25, the average monthly GST collection was ₹1.84 lakh crore, compared to ₹95,000 crore five years ago in 2020-21.

The count of taxpayers has also more than doubled

When GST was rolled out in 2017, there were 6.5 million registered taxpayers, which has now risen to over 15.1 million. This has further solidified the government’s tax base.

The government rolled out GST nationwide on July 1, 2017. Following this, 17 taxes and 13 cesses imposed by central and state governments were abolished. Upon completing seven years of GST, the Ministry of Finance highlighted the accomplishments made over this time.

GST is an indirect tax that replaced several indirect taxes like VAT, service tax, purchase tax, and excise duty. It is structured into four tax slabs of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
